The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC‑CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain.

It houses MareNostrum, one of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers, and hosts major HPC initiatives such as PRACE and EuroHPC JU.

Context and Mission

The Digital Health Unit, led by Dr. Paula Petrone, applies artificial intelligence to healthcare with the goal of delivering innovative solutions that have a true impact on patient care.

This position is part of a collaboration with the AI in Cardiology Group at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Drs.

Martin Descalzo & Matias Calandrelli) to develop AI solutions in cardiology that advance clinical practice and contribute to product‑oriented applications.

Key Duties
  • Develop AI models for cardiology, focusing on analysis of cardiac signals, medical image analysis, and integration of biomarkers.

  • Apply deep learning, transformers, foundational models, and generative‑AI approaches.

  • Collaborate with clinical researchers and cardiologists to co‑design and validate AI tools.

  • Contribute to the development of product‑ready applications for use in healthcare settings.

  • Ensure models are robust, explainable, and clinically relevant.

  • Publish and disseminate results in scientific and innovation forums.

Requirements

Education

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related fields.

  • PhD welcomed but not required.

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

  • 3 to 5 years hands‑on experience in deep learning applied to biomedical data, with emphasis on transformational and foundational models.

  • Strong background in signal processing, particularly for biomedical signals such as cardiac data.

  • Proven expertise in medical image analysis, preferably in cardiology or related domains.

  • Solid programming skills in Python (or similar) and use of deep‑learning libraries such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.

  • Strong interest in developing healthcare applications with real clinical impact.

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience

  • Experience collaborating with clinical partners or working on healthcare datasets.

  • Familiarity with biomarkers or multimodal data integration.

  • Fluency in English, Catalan, and Spanish.

Competences

  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills.

  • Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams (engineers, clinicians, researchers).

Conditions
  • Location: BSC within the Life Sciences Department.

  • Contract: Full‑time (37.5 h/week), open‑ended with competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

  • Benefits: state‑of‑the‑art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and relocation support.

  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus recognition of public holidays following the collective agreement.

  • Starting date: ASAP.

Applications Procedure and Process

  • Selection: competitive examination system (Concurso‑Oposición) with two phases—curriculum analysis (40 %) and interview phase (60 %).

    A minimum of 30 points out of 60 is required.

  • Recruitment panel will include at least three people, with at least 25 % representation of women.

  • Process includes technical competency assessment, knowledge and skill evaluation, and a personality questionnaire.

  • All candidates will receive structured feedback after the interview phase.
